VIRENDER Sehwag scored an unbeaten 87 as Delhi Daredevils recorded an eight-wicket victory over Pune Warriors overnight. The hard-hitting opener stroked three sixes and 10 fours off 48 balls as Delhi scored 2-148 in only 16 overs after restricting Pune to 2-146 at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.

Delhi thus avenged its 20-run loss to the same side three days ago, and remain on top of the Indian Premier League ladder with 10 points after five wins from seven games. Pune have four wins from eight games.

Gadkari attacks Delhi govt on graft

Joining the campaign for municipal polls, BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on Delhi government accusing it of involvement in large scale corruption, and promised a clean civic administration if his party was voted back to power.

The BJP president released a dossier listing 35 alleged scams and cases of corruption involving Delhi Government and slammed it for ignoring findings of Prime Minister-appointed Shunglu Committee and Comptroller and Auditor General examining alleged irregularities in hosting of the CWG.

Government warns could cancel Kingfisher Airlines license

Kingfisher Airlines Ltd said it will halt international flights and fly just 20 planes as it seeks funding, hours after the government warned the carrier’s license may be canceled if it fails to meet safety norms and financial viability conditions.

The embattled airline, which has debts of $1.3 billion, is scrambling to raise funds after banks refused to lend more for its day-to-day operations. A big cutback in flights has reduced its revenue, leaving the carrier controlled by flamboyant liquor baron Vijay Mallya with little cash to pay staff, airports, tax authorities and lenders.

Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati in her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections has shown two residential buildings, one each in Delhi and Lucknow. The market value of the two assets is Rs 77.54 crore. While the commercial buildings were purchased in 2004 and 2005, the residential accommodation in upscale SP Marg, New Delhi, was bought in 2009 for Rs 54.80 crore.

In fact, two residential plots have been clubbed together to form a single asset in which she has invested Rs 7.78 crore on development and construction.

CBI rescues minor girl forced into prostitution

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today said it had rescued a 14-year-old minor girl who was missing from Darjeeling since November, 2011. Delhi ‘Frogman’ finds rare amphibian family

In a rare scientific feat being described as the ‘discovery of the year’, a team of scientists led by a Delhi University professor, S D Biju, has found a new family of legless amphibians commonly known as caecilians. The new family has been named Chikilidae, consisting of tailless burrowing caecilians which evolved separately from other caecilian species more than 140 million years ago.

Its closest relatives are found in Africa, which shows that it existed before the Indian subcontinent broke away from the African landmass.

The remarkable discovery, set to be published in the upcoming issue of Proceedings of Royal Society of London, came after massive soil-digging surveys in about 250 localities spread over five years in each Northeast Indian state. The work is the most extensive systematic programme of dedicated caecilian surveys ever attempted.

Union home minister P Chidambaram has said the magnet bomb attack in Delhi on Monday was an act of terrorism and that the Israeli diplomat’s wife was the obvious target.

“We believe it was a very well trained person who committed the attack and the target was the Israeli diplomat’s wife. The investigations are on,” he said. The home minister, who did not want to hazard a guess on the group or individual responsible for the attack said: “We are not pointing fingers at anyone or any group yet, but we condemn the attack in the strongest terms.”
